ØST har endelig åpnet

ØST is open for buisness!!

I går kveld kom meldingen.

Haffy quits the blog!

And now, the end is near, so I face the final curtain… Well not actually, just new beginnings!

It was in April four years ago I started this blog, it’s funny to look back at how much I’ve changed and how much the beer scene have changed since then. The breweries that I loved back when I was a newbie, those that I thought was the boldest and the most uncompromising are now mainstream. Those brews that I used to love, the extremely bitter or super sweet beers are now unbalanced crap.  It’s also funny to see how many of my friends and acquaintances that disliked “specialty brews “ that now themselves have become craft beer drinkers. Back then the beer bloggers, we were the weird ones, now most of us who wrote beer blogs back then have either started a beer related business or been hired by the business. People with qualified knowledge about beers & brewing is in demand.

As some of you might have noticed this blog has been quiet for a while, after I quit my old job I became part owner in a bar and later I’ve also became part owner in a beer festival. So with that in mind it didn’t feel right to keep beer blogging for three reasons. First of all working full time with something you also spend all your spare time working on is too much. Second reason is legality is this minefield of an alcohol law we have in Norway. Third, I would be totally bias. I feel I’ve got as much out of this blog as I can, it has been used as a tool to learn more and educate myself, while also getting to know the great people in the scene. Some of who are my eternal friends.

So with these words I leave the “Die by the Beer” blog into the hands of my friend and co-writer Kjetil, you’re no longer a sidekick! Do with it as you wish.

Sorry no updated photo... ;)

For those of you looking for information on my new projects, others than me will write and publish about these things when it’s time. Die By The Beer was a fun thing for me, now the fun will continue elsewhere… J

Cheers from Haffy

1349: A pale horse named death!

"And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him"

The release of the second collaboration between norwegian black metal kings 1349, Lervig Aktiebryggeri & Surly Brewing is nigh. A propper american pale ale with orange & lemon peel this time nailing it to the cross with 6,66% abv. The official release was already back in June when the band was on tour and had the release at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in Minneapolis together with Surly Brewing. Apparently Todd Haug (headbrewer of Surly) had the opening act for them with a drone/ guitar piece and played together with the band covering Celtic Frost. This time it`s the European release, brewed at Norway`s Lervig Aktiebryggeri in Stavanger by mr Magic Mike himself, Mike Murphy. The venue for the premiere will be at Cafè Fiasco in Oslo Wednesday the 22nd of July.

I let drummer and visionary artist Frost reveal the history & intention of the beer.

"It is a time of joy and celebration here in the 1349 camp. Some nine months after the launching of our first brew made in collaboration with breweries Lervig (No) and Surly (Us); the 1349 Black Ale. The 1349 Black Ale is a Massive Beer of Chaos – an abundance of tastes and aromas like turkish coffee, licorice, dark chocolate, forest and eucalyptus; a crossover of several different powerful beer styles, and with a potential for developing complexity.

We are now ready to give birth to our second brew. Ladies and gentlemen – we bring to you the 1349 Pale Ale!

Our 1349 Pale Ale stands in stark contrast to the Black Ale with it’s straightforward freshness, crispness and thirst quenching qualities, while actually remaining tied to it’s black brother through several shared qualities and taste elements. The beer of choice when you want something fresh, fruity, crisp and hoppy that kick starts you after having shed blood, sweat and tears. To produce this effect, there is a rather great deal of both bittering and aromatic hops, some serious dry hopping of course, there is acidulated malt, orange peel and spruce. The taste profile has been discussed and analysed, thought about, dreamt of, tested, and evaluated.

The ideas for the 1349 Black Ale and the 1349 Pale Ale were developed in parallel; from the beginning of it was an essential part of the 1349 beer project to create two very different brews that would make up opposite forces in a duality. We felt that the Black Ale needed to contain all that darkness, power and chaos that 1349 is all about and display it in a signature style, while the 1349 Pale Ale should be far less esoteric and rather address the trivial and physical side of the music/beer intersection – the perfect ale for quenching your enormous thirst after a show.

Fundamentally, the 1349 beers come from our collective interest in craft beers and our intention to make this our very own project. With the great breweries Surly and Lervig collaborating with us, and hence make such a project possible, we have been able to realise our ideas to their full potential.

The 1349 Black Ale has been met with a fantastic response, and we look forward to brewing more batches of that strange old brew. But today the hoppy bells chime as we raise our glasses filled with the delicately crisp 1349 Pale Ale. Revel in Dionysian pleasures. Skål!!"

Frost

Todd Haug also gets a few words about the beer and the show they did.

"To really get the beer as dry as Frost wanted it we carefully titrated the wort Ph well below normal beer. In addition we used bitter orange and lemon peel in the whirlpool, this adds dryness and citrus notes that work great with all the Equinox hops we used! The release show was great,I personally opened it with a improvised solo drone/looping guitar set. I joined 1349 for a Celtic Frost cover of Usurper for the encore!"

Celtic Frost is one of the early thrash & black metal pioneers of the 80`s, and one of my favoritt bands, which I had the pleasure of seeing live in 2006, before they broke up and later transformed into Triptycon, another great band and tourmates of 1349. I also had the pleasure of tasting the beer just a few days after bottling, just as I did with the 1349 Black Ale. It is very refreshing indeed, with nice tones of pine, tropical fruit, mango and orange/ lemon zest (the Lervig version does not include Equinox hops due to availability). The lable illustration is from Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen, a 19th century artist who really captured the mysticism and dark powers of Norwegian folklore and horror. This is a beer you can zip from a tulip glass and snob your way into Hell, or do it proparly and drink it straight from the bottle while stabbing someones eye out with your armwrist spikes at a 1349 gig. It`s still black metal even if it`s pale. It`s as if it has been brewed in a Massive Cauldron of Chaos!!!!

Release the Warpigs

WarPigs logo

Rumors were already circulating during CBC 2014. Some murmuring about a new brewpub that was going to open sometime in the future. Warpigs was the name (I can almost smell the Black Sabbath reference here), but at the time that was all the info I had. Soon I came to know more about this mystic place, being a concept cooked up by no other than Mikkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller and the infamous guys of 3 Floyds Brewing from Munster, Indiana. 2 giants in beer brewing from both sides of the Atlantic coming together in the heart of Scandinavia, Mikkels homebase, Copenhagen. Opening night is getting closer and the pieces are starting to come together, so I wanted to have a little chat with Warpigs Event & Communication Manager, Kamilla Hannibal, who also happens to be Staff Sergeant for the Warpigs Troopers.

“Both 3 Floyds and Mikkeller are well-known for both their experimental, well-crafted beers as well as their strong personalities. They feed of trying new things and doing exciting collaborations. Nick and Chris from American 3 Floyds were really into the CPH beer and food scene and had been friends with Mikkel Bjergsø for quite a long time. It seemed natural that WarPigs should happen.” she says.

The bar is a 1000 square meter building located at the now up and coming old meatpackers district in Copenhagen, called “Kødbyen”, just a short stride from Mikkeller Bar in Viktoriagade which beer geeks visiting the city should be familiar with. Originally they were aiming for another location in the city, but as soon as Mikkel and Jacob Alsing, Operation Manager for Mikkeller, heard about a vacant spot in Kødbyen, they wasted no time checking it out. “5 minutes after arriving they decided that there were no other place for WarPigs to be, but in this old slaughterhouse. The area has a raw and straightforward approach to food and drink. Suits us at WarPigs very well.” Since it is a preserved area, being an important historic site, this gives them some challenges regarding what they are allowed to do with the floors, walls or ceiling. Using their wits, the look will be a combination of rock club meets Twin Peaks meets cantina meets your dream beer Mecca

So what does this make Warpigs, you ask. Well, the aim is pretty straight forward and shot from the hip. To be the best damn brewpub in the world, and if that is not enough, they are cooking up some serious Texan bbq using what is to be the biggest meat smokers in Europe, able to smoke 1 ton of meat per day. In charge of this madness is chef Andrew Hroza. Former rock`n roll roadie chef for Slipknot, Nora Jones and Van Halen, among others, and head chef and Cicerone at Goose Island Brewpub, before heading over to Copenhagen to run the kitchen at WPs. Do not be afraid of smoke, spice and large portions. But don't forget to wash that down with one of their 6 freshly made house beers from their own brewery, or one of the other beers from their 22 on tap, Maybe something from their massive barrel age cellar?

The beers will mainly be the creation of Mikkeller and 3 Floyds, specially made for the brewpub, but they will be brewed on their 250 000 l a year brewery by former 3 Floyds crew and now head brewer of WPs, Kyle Wolak and his accomplice Lan-Xin Foo, who has worked and brewed for Mikkeller for some time now. They will also be creating some of their own recipes and experimental beers, so don be shy, there will be enough to go around for everyone. For the few lucky there will also be bottles to be bought, but these will be limited to the bar and not distributed elsewhere. The main focus of the bar will be their own beers, guest brews and tap takeovers, and they will be brewing all the time, except for when they are allowed their daily coffee break.

But what is this deal about the Warpigs Troopers?

“We want amazing ambassadors to make WarPigs unique. The response has been overwhelming and we are getting close to 200 members a month before we even open. Basically you can choose from 5 different ranks. Trooper, Lieutenant, Major, Colonel or General.
The higher rank, the bigger perks. The basic perks are some merchandize and discounts. The
crazy stuff are invites to out-of-the-ordinary events and pre-sales of extremely rare limited
edition bottles. It is for beer nerds who love beer and fun and games.”

Warpigs Troopers is basically a ranking membership you buy, giving you access to certain privileges, like closed events, pre-sales of limited edition beers and merchandise. There will also be discounts in the bar and access to areas that is limited to your rank in the trooper hierarchy. If you`re in the “Mug Club” you're swimming with the big fish, with your own personal mug, having access to smaller and more exclusive events that is above the lower range of Trooper. Highest rank is General of the Armies, and “There can be only one”, to quote Christopher Lambert in Highlander from 1986. There is yet to be a General, but if you`ve got the guts, and the cash, you might be leading the Troopers of the coolest brewpub in the world.

If that is not enough, homebrewers across the continent will be delighted to hear that Whitelabs will be setting up camp in the same building as Warpigs, giving us European homebrewers and professionals an easy access to top quality yeast.

“White Labs will occupy space at the WarPigs brewpub. The relationship will bring three widely recognized companies in the brewing world into close proximity and will create a strong beer focus to the historic meatpacking district in Copenhagen, where the building is located. Known for its creative gastronomy, growing craft beer and music scene, and robust art district, this Copenhagen district is exploding into a haven for brewing and culinary arts.” (Whitelabs)

“I am greatly looking forward to collaborating with White Labs,” said Kyle Wolak, head brewer at WarPigs. “It is an extraordinary opportunity to expand my knowledge of yeast and its vital role in the brewing process.” (Whitelabs)

Opening day is on April the 10th, just a few weeks before Copenhagen Beer Celebration opens its doors for the fourth time. What is going to happen on this day?

“It is more a question of what´s not going to happen. To fusion 3 Floyds love for heavy metal and Mikkeller´s cold and cool Nordic approach we are spicing it up with Twin Peaks weirdness and dark-carnival vibes. We don't want to tell too much, of course.”

We think the best thing for you to do is stop reading and come by and see for yourself.

Please check them out here and visit them when in Copenhagen.

1349 Black Ale by Surly & Lervig

So finally here it is, the first collaboration beer between the band 1349, Surly Brewing Company & Lervig Aktiebryggeri. A beer that's been in planning for 4 years. You can hear the story in the video and also enjoy the awesome majestic music of the premiere Norwegian Black Metal band 1349!

Please watch in full screen HD, turn up the volume!

I have of course tasted this massive brew and I have to say I LIKE IT! When I first saw the recipe I was like, Woah that's just insane! I don't know how it's possible, but it actually works. I think I would call it an Black Imperial Cascadian Barley Wine Style Stout, hehe. It's packed with dark malts and strong espresso coffee, some of the batch has been barrel aged and it's heavily dry hopped, this is just one crazy beer you have to try. Dark as the abyss of a black hole, full bodied like Anna Nicole Smith, with the aroma of burnt churches and race car tires, this 13,49 ABV strong beer will knock you out like a pissed off Mike Tyson on cocaine.

Approved by Haffy

So where can you try this beast of brew? At the release, it will be in the loft at Tou Scene in Stavanger at Halloween (Friday 31.10.2014) during the sold out beer festival What's Brewing, 1349 will be there and so will brewmaster Mike Murphy of Lervig. The event will start at 19:00, see you there...
